How to replace Crankshaft Front Seal on 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt?


Crankshaft Front Seal


Removal & Installation



2.0L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Remove the accessory drive belt tensioner bolts.
  3. Remove the accessory drive belt tensioner.
  4. Remove the idler pulley bolts.
  5. Remove the idler pulley.
  6. Remove the alternator bracket and lift hook assembly bolts.
  7. Remove the alternator bracket and lift hook assembly.
  8. Remove the engine front cover bolts.
  9. Remove the long water pump bolt.
  10. Remove the engine front cover and gaskets.
  11. Remove the crankshaft front cover oil seal with an appropriate tool.

To install:
  1. Install the engine front cover with a new gasket.
  2. Install the long water pump bolt. Tighten the water pump bolt to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  3. Install the engine front cover bolts. Tighten the engine front cover bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  4. Install the generator bracket and lift hook assembly.
  5. Install the generator bracket and lift hook assembly bolts. Tighten the bolts to 31 ft. lbs. (42 Nm).
  6. Install the idler pulley.
  7. Install the idler pulley bolts. Tighten the pulley bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
  8. Install the accessory drive belt tensioner.
  9. Install the accessory drive belt tensioner bolts. Tighten the accessory drive belt tensioner bolts to 24 ft. lbs. (32 Nm).
2.2L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Remove the crankshaft damper.
  3. Remove the drive belt tensioner.
  4. Remove the engine front cover to water pump bolt.
  5. Remove the remaining engine front cover bolts.
  6. Remove the engine front cover.

To install:
  1. If removed install a new engine front cover gasket.
  2. Install the engine front cover.
  3. Install the engine front cover bolts. Tighten the engine front cover bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  4. Install the water pump bolt. Tighten the water pump bolt to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  5. Install the drive belt tensioner.
  6. Install the drive belt tensioner bolt. Tighten the drive belt tensioner bolt to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
  7. Install the crankshaft damper.
2.4L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Remove the crankshaft damper. Refer to Crankshaft Damper removal and installation.
  3. Use a flat-bladed tool to remove the seal from the front cover.

To install:
  1. Use the J 35268-A to install the crankshaft front oil seal to the engine front cover.
  2. Install the crankshaft damper. Refer to Crankshaft Damper removal and installation.
